E-News Issue #6

4 February 1998

Happy New Year to all of you. If you are still wondering and looking, we did not send out a newsletter in January. The holiday season took over events! Hope you all had a good one.

Lights

We are making a few changes to our selection of lights. We have added in a 2D light fitting with a square diffuser. The unit comes complete with the tube, inverter, diffuser and switch. As stock runs out, we will be replacing the 20W 12V fluoro inverter (INV-008) from the current Asian made model to an Australian made sine wave unit.
It does not have a case around it, however we will supply some standoffs so you can fit it to your light kit.

How much Power?

We checked a couple 34 cm televisions including a Sony Trinatron. The label suggested 72-80W but they only measured 22-36 watts (28W average) when measured on the AC side. However, they drew 48-60W measured on the DC side of the inverter. We mentioned a few months ago that most TVs seemed to have about the same efficiency but Philips appeared to be the best. We measured a 52 cm Philips TV which only drew 40W on the AC side and between 4.2 and 5.8A at 12V on the DC side of the inverter. However, the Philips did experience some fairly faint lines on modified square wave inverters.

Next month. I'd like to look at 230V domestic water pumps. Can you give me some details about yours if run off an inverter - how many watts does the label suggest? Actual DC amps? What size inverter are you using? Give us your feedback!

Solar Hot Water Systems

Electric hot water heaters are the biggest electricity user in Australian homes without electric heating or air conditioning. A household using 200L of electrically heated hot water per day would produce some 4.5 tonnes of greenhouse gas per year. A solar hot water system can supply about 80% of our domestic hot water needs. In Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide this drops to about 60%, Perth/Brisbane 75% and Darwin up to 95% (adapted from article in ReNew #62).

Your Feedback

Please send us your questions, suggestions, interesting facts and figures etc. We are always on the lookout for interesting material to put in this newsletter.

Cheers from Dave and all the RPC crew.
