E-News Issue #64

10 October 2003

Well my last newsletter was dated 10 Sept, so I have managed to get this one out on time!

PL Lamp Shades

I mentioned what a huge difference these made to the 'useful' light cast downwards on a table, bench or the floor when used with compact fluoros. To encourage their use, we are offering a 10% discount on these Plastic shades (260mm) until 1st November 03.

LCD Television

In Australia the new generation small LCD type television is coming into the Department stores. They are retailing for around AUD$1000 - $1200.

One customer bought a LG model – rated at 38W and for 230V. On arrival at home, he discovered that it came with a plug pack with an output of 12V DC. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to contact him since he connected it! I would be very interested to hear from you if you have one of these new small LCD type televisions. In particular:

a) What is its power rating and have you actually measured the power consumption?
b) Does it work on a Modified square wave type inverter?
c) Does it work direct off your 12V battery system (without an inverter)?

In relation to points B & C above, I would caution you to consider the possible warranty implications of trying these out! This is a trial at your own risk and I would suggest you do not try it – but if you have already tried it let me know! We can then pass on the results to our customers.

The 'issues' are – is a modified square wave inverter okay as opposed to a sine wave one?

The second issue is that while they may run off a 12V power supply, they may not run off a 'solar battery' situation where the actual voltage will typically vary from say 11 to 15 volts (for wet lead acid batteries).

Cheers from Dave and all the RPC crew.

Dave Lambert (Director)
