New Rebates from 1st July 2007

Install a Solar Power Station and get $8000* and more from the Government in Solar Rebates.
Solar Panel Rebate of $8 Per Watt or 50% Rebate off total installation costs, plus Renewable Energy Certificates.

*For Australian Customers only, Rebates and RECS values subject to changes in government policy and price of carbon emmissions.

PVRP Dollar per Watt Rebate is now called:-
Solar Homes & Communites Plan

You may qualify for up to $8 per watt rebate (up to $8000) for grid connected and stand alone systems on your principle place of residence (in Australia only).

Eligibility

  • Rebates and grants are available for the purchase and installation of major equipment items. Equipment must be new and not second-hand.
  • Residential rebates are for photovoltaic systems that are connected to a main-grid or are very close to a main-grid.
  • Any system eligible for a rebate under the Renewable Remote Power Generation Program is ineligible for the Solar Homes and Communities Plan; applicants should discuss which rebate to apply for with an accredited designer and installer .
  • The person who carries out the installation must be accredited for design and installation of photovoltaic systems.
  • Applicant's household taxable income must be less than $100,000 .
Minimum system size Australian Government support Eligibility*
Residential (Rebates)
New systems
450 watts Up to $8000
($8/W up to 1kW)
  • The system must be installed at your principle place of residence
  • You have not previously received a rebate for a photovoltaic system from the Australian Government
Extensions to old systems
450 watts Up to $5000
($5/W up to 1kW)
  • If you have not previously received a rebate for your system, you may be eligible for a rebate to extend your current system by 1kW
  • If you have previously received a rebate for systems less than 1kW you may be eligible for an extension rebate to bring the system up to a 1kW capacity
(eg Existing 600 Watt system, must install minimum 450Watts to qualify for 400Watts of rebate @$5 per Watt)
Schools and Community Use Buildings (Competitive Grants)
450 watts 50% of the system cost
up to $12,000
  • Grants are available to community organisations and schools that install photovoltaic systems where there is significant educational value.
*NOTE: Conditions apply; this information is a guide only, for further information refer to the programme guidelines.

The Australian Government's Renewable Remote Power Generation Programme (RRPGP) provides financial support to increase the use of renewable generation in remote parts of Australia that presently rely on fossil fuel for electricity supply.

Rebates of up to 50 per cent of the capital cost of renewable generation and essential enabling equipment (eg panels, batteries, inverter, installation) are available to applicants that fully comply with the eligibility requirements and procedures.

The guidelines are complex but a few key points include:

  • The property must generally be 1 km or $30,000 cost away from the grid
  • The applicant / property must be a principle place of residence, a non-profit organization or a business. Holiday homes, rental properties, solar pumps are not eligeable.
  • If it is your principle place of residence you may be eligeable for the $8/ watt Solar Homes & Communites Plan rebate.
This may be a better option if your total system cost is under $16,000.
You can only get the Solar Homes & Communites Plan or the RRPGP rebate and not both.

It is possible to be eligeable for this rebate if the system is an upgrade to an existing system. The
panels must be at least 450 watts and their value must be at least 30% of the total upgrade cost.

RECS Certificates

When you install a Solar power station you qualify for Renewable Energy Certificates that you can keep or sell to others.

These certificates have a value and at January 2008 they were being purchased for around *$49 per certificate (this amount varies subject to market conditions).

To calculate the RECs a system qulaifies for :-
Zone Rating x Rated power output (kW) of your Solar (PV) system = Annual Number of Eligible RECs

A 1 Kw system can generate 1.43 RECS per year in Northern NSW.

If the photovoltaic system was installed on or after 1 April 2001 you have the option of creating RECs in regular one-year or by five-year batches.

If you installed your photovoltaic system on or after the 31 July 2005 and you have not previously created or assigned the right to your RECs for one or five years you are eligible to create or assign RECs for your photovoltaic system for a one-off 15 year period. For the 15 year option, to apply you must claim your RECs within 12 months of the system’s installation date.

If you generate the RECs for the 15 year term this equates to 21 RECS which at *$49 per REC is $1029.

The value of the certificates is constantly changing and may be worth more or less over the life time of the system.

Example If you wished to create RECs on a 15-year basis for a photovoltaic unit installed after 1/8/2005 that has a rated output or kW capacity of 1.040 kW (our entry level grid feed kit SGK-1040) in the postcode area of 2480, you must:

  1. Look up the postcode in Table 1 to establish your Postcode Zone: 3
  2. Look up the Postcode Zone in Table 2 to establish your Zone Rating: 1.382
  3. Multiply your Zone Rating by the kW capacity: 1.382 x 1.040kW = 1.43728KWh
  4. Multiple by 15 years: 1.43728 x 15 years = 21.5592 MWh
  5. Round down the total amount of electricity taken to be generated to the last whole MWh to determine the number of RECs you are eligible to create: 21.5592 MWh = 21 RECs
  6. This system is rated at less than 10 kW and has a total annual output of less than 25 MWh, it does not need to be accredited as a power station.

*(The value at May 2008, this amount varies subject to market conditions).
