This year's Sustainable House Day (SHD) is on Sunday 9 th September between 10am – 4pm.

Over 200+ homes across Australia, including the architect designed Rainbow Power Company head office in Nimbin, will be opening their doors for the public to tour. Open homes are free. There is also a variety of events, activities, seminars and public tours of green Buildings as part of the SHD campaign.

Get a full list of all open houses and activities on the Sustainable House Day website.

Aims and Objectives

Sustainable House Day provides an enjoyable, informative experience that contributes to local community awareness of sustainable living.

The aim of the Sustainable House Day is to give people the chance to get a real-life look inside houses that have been designed, built or fitted out with sustainability in mind.

Exchange ideas and learn from each other. Visits to the houses are free of charge – so it will cost nothing to see how easy and economical the move to greener living can be.

History

Sustainable House Day started in 2001 as an initiative of the Australian Solar Energy Society (AuSES). Ten years later (2011), over 200 homes opened their doors to over 40,000 people as more and more Australians continue to embrace renewable energy, recycling and other practices designed to lessen our impact on the environment.

If you want to make your house & lifestyle 'greener', there are also plenty of ideas on our website, from Grid Connect Solar Systems to Solar Cookers.
